Shiuli or Parijat - Unconditional and unconventional love in October

Deepak Kumar

(Shiuli flowers are believed to flourish just before the arrival of Shardiya Navratras -Durga Puja, which is generally around mid-October- Based on the October movie and parijat flower story)

Shiuli is the Bengali name for these white and orange tip flowers. They are also known as Harsringar, Shefali, or Parijat means night-flowering jasmine. Shiuli flowers bloom for a short period, both in a year and in a day.

Shiuli flowers are believed to flourish just before the arrival of Shardiya Navratras (Durga Puja), which is generally around mid-October. In Bengali families, people spread a bed sheet on the ground in night to collect shiuli flowers, and in the morning make garlands to worship the goddess Durga

Shiuli’s mother, too, narrates to Dan (Varun Dhavan) how she would spread a bed sheet on the ground and collect shiuli flowers with her grandfather as a child. The representation of shiuli adds an inexplicable sense of belongingness in the movie

These delicate and sweet-scented shiuli flowers bloom for only fifteen days and are at their best during dusk. They fade away before the break of dawn since they cannot withstand the heat of the sun.

The movie scene wherein Shiuli takes a shiuli flower in her hand and smells it when the season has just begun. The newly blossomed flowers parallel the initial happy phase of Shiuli’s life

The myth goes that the Sun God visits the tree or the Princess during the night, and the shiuli flowers become fragrant as they are kissed by the sun. However, these flowers lose their brightness during the daytime as they are sensitive to heat.

This ancient tale is perfectly depicted in the movie, at the beginning of winter, when flowers are flourishing and lovers are confessing their love, one cannot see any affection between Dan (Varun Dhavan) and Shiuli. However, as winter approaches and the shiuli tree's bloom comes to an end, their love starts to deepen. Following the life-threatening accident that Shiuli encountered brought the shiuli flowers for Shiuli, Dan (Varun Dhavan) says the following lines to her in an emotional scene from the movie.

“Aaj itne hi mile, season khatam ho raha hai”

According to a belief, there was a princess named 'Parijat' who had feelings for Lord Surya. However, her love was not reciprocated, and as a result, Princess Parijat ended her life. It is said that the Parijat tree sprouted from the very spot where her tomb was built.

In the tale, Shiuli, a character who leaves the audience early, remains alive through small moments and conversations. Her life is cut short by an unfortunate incident, and she is left to experience life to the fullest. The story is reminiscent of the gloomy shade of a garden, with Shiuli lying in the hospital, at home, and finally in a grave. The audience can't know if Shiuli will stay alive to experience the next moment, but they can always hope to witness the heartwarming shiuli flowers brighten up the gloomy surroundings in October.

Last Scene - Remembering Shiuli after her death Shiuli's mother tells Dan (Varun Dhavan) that she was named Shiuli because she loved collecting the shiuli flower as a child with her grandfather.

She explains how these flowers are short-lived, as they bloom only at night and wither by dawn. Sadly, it points out that Shiuli was also short-lived just like the shiuli flowers.

One day they sit in her backyard and talk about Shiuli. Shiuli's mother tells Dan (Varun Dhavan) that her family is moving to their hometown Trichy, but she doesn't want to leave Shiuli's plant behind.

Varun Dhavan promises to take care of it. As the story concludes, Shiuli's family has moved away, and Dan carries the shiuli plant with him as a symbol of the unconditional and unconventional love that had blossomed in his heart for Shiuli.
